A Clinical Review of Acute Poisonings in Geriatric Patients from Rural Gangwon Province

Abstract

|
Background: Recently, elderly persons with acute poisoning have increased and have related with suicide attempts. The purpose of this study was to compare and analyze the clinical aspects and outcomes of acute poisoning in an aged group with those of a non-aged.
Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis the 207 patients who visited the emergency department(ED) with acute poisoning from 2009 January to 2010 December. Two group were created, older group than 65 years and younger than 65 years. and the following were carefully compared - annual frequency, gender distributions, causes of poisoning, poisoning substance, motives of suicide, past psychiatric history, psychiatric interview, psychiatric diagnosis, disposition after ED, disposition after admission, Poisoning severity Score(PSS), hospitalization duration, intensive care unit(ICU) admission rate, mortality.
Results: Annual frequency was 0.1% in the age group and 0.3% in the non-aged group, entirely 0.4%. The cause of poisoning was accidental more often in the age group than in the non-aged group. In the motives of suicide, health problem was more often in the age group than in the non-aged(p=0.000). The age group had less interview with psychiatrists and diagnosed more depressive disorder than did the non-aged(p=0.010, p=0.041). PSS, mortality were higher in the age group(p=0.002, p=0.010).
Conclusions: Comprehension about the cause of poisoning and the poisoning substance in the aged population are needed and because of seriousness of acute poisoning in the elderly, not only active medical care but also psychiatric treatment are also necessary.
